A “large concrete structure containing metal” collapsed at the site in the Nechells area of Birmingham, and West Midlands Police pronounced all five victims dead at the scene with a sixth man taken to hospital with serious leg injuries.
The plant collects and recycles waste stream’s in full compliance with pre-treatment legislation, including metal (non-ferrous, ferrous and precious), cardboard/paper, and plastic wastes.
Police said an investigation into what happened was underway and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) had been notified.
Earlier this year more than 100 tonnes of shredded scrap metal caught fire at the plant.
