Westminster Magistrates’ Court heard how an employee of the metal packaging firm suffered severe damage to his left hand after getting his hand trapped underneath the punch on a mechanical power-press.
Roberts Metal Packaging is a major European manufacturer of pre-threaded metal caps and aluminium and tinplate jars and containers, serving the cosmetics, healthcare and food sectors.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation found that the company had failed to prevent access to this dangerous part of the machinery at its 9,000 sqm manufacturing facility in South-East London.
The company pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 11(1) of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 and was fined £7,000 and ordered to pay costs of £3,520.
